2011 Man of the Year

Mr. Wayne Giddens

Wayne Giddens has been employed by the City of Adel for 37 years, having started as a motor grader operator, among other jobs, with the Street Department in 1975.  Originally from Berrien County, Wayne worked his way through the ranks to the Water and Sewer Department where he stayed until 1980, then became Assistant Public Works Superintendent.  In 1991, he was named Public Works Superintendent by the City of Adel, the position he holds today.  He is married to the former Barbara Ann Langley of Berrien County.

Wayne has lived 37 years in Adel and Cook County and has two daughters and three grandsons: Terri Alligood and son Taylor Alligood, and Sherry Ballmann and sons Cain Surrency and Will Ballmann. The Ballmanns live in Minneapolis, MN.

"My 37 years with the city of Adel has been very enjoyable because the people of this city are good people and they have been good to me," says Wayne.  "I think the greatest thing about this city and county are the people who make up this community."

Wayne Giddens not only makes sure the city is up and running every day with all the many services that are provided to its citizens, but he takes time to manage all the events that are held in Adel throughout the year.  This includes staging events at the depot parking lot, overseeing the set up at the Adel Daylily Festival, organizing the Christmas Parade and managing countless other projects and programs that go on during the year.  Whatever needs to get done in the City of Adel, Wayne Giddens makes sure it happens, efficiently and effectively.

Wayne says the City of Adel has come a long way since he came here in 1975.  "Back then our equipment was so old you could see through the floorboards.  Now, with the planning and work done by our City Managers and our Mayor and Council over the years, we have an updated fleet of vehicles and a well-trained group of professional workers.  I've seen a lot of change over the years and I'm proud of what the City has been able to accomplish," says Giddens.

Wayne's lives his life each day knowing that the Lord and His Son, Jesus Christ, will provide for us all. "I know what good things He has done for me and my family, and I know what He does for all of us.  I just put my faith in Him and His plan for us all."

Wayne and Barbara have been members of LivingWay Community Baptist Church in Adel for the last 8 years.  He has served as a Deacon at LivingWay for the past 6 years.
